Each user or application server owns a pair of encryption keys which is made up of a private key and a public key. When transmitting confidential information, a sender can first establish his or her identity by digitally signing the document using his or her private key and then use the recipient's public key in the encryption process. The recipient, in turn, can use the sender's public key to verify the validity of the signature and then use his/her corresponding private key to decrypt the content of the document. This will not only authenticate the sender's identity but also ensure that only the intended recipient is privy to the content of the document.
